Residential Group Housing
Safe Haven has two homes in Prior Lake (Scott County) with 10 beds for girls, ages 10-18. Reasons for out-of-home placement include:
- Child protection case for abuse or neglect in the home
- Children in need of long-term foster care or unsuccessful in foster care
A need to transition from treatment facility, chemical dependency treatment or correctional placement, or probation violation for a non-violent offense.
Youth are referred from County Mental Health, Court Services and Social Services staff. The average stay at Safe Haven is 5 months. Approximately 40-50 youth are accepted into the program each year. Each young person participates in the development of an individualized treatment plan based on his or her needs and goals. The focus is on reunifying youth with their families at the end of the program.
We provide individual and group counseling, 24-hour awake staffing, strengths-based individualized treatment plans, social and interpersonal skills training, cognitive development skills, reunification counseling for youth and families, independent living skills training, coordination with schools, clinical consultation, recreational activities and home visit transportation assistance.
Typically, beginning at age 17, youth are encouraged to begin transitional services and participate in independent living skills programming. Most participants obtain part-time employment and attend school.
We help youth develop and maintain healthy relationships and learn to communicate and interact with family, peers and adults. Safe Haven devotes attention to helping youth identify and manage their own behaviors.
